SEASONING YOUR CAST IRON COOKING GRIDS

Please follow these easy steps before you use your cast iron cooking grids.

This video will show you everything you need to know about maintaining your cast iron cooking grids.

FIRST TIME USE

WASH YOUR GRIDS

Before cooking on your gas grill for the first time, wash the grids using a light detergent and water. Rinse then dry with a towel. Never air-dry grids or wash them in a dishwasher.

SEASON YOUR GRIDS

APPLY OIL TO COOKING GRIDS Apply oil generously to both sides of the grids. Coat every part of cast iron grids thoroughly using a Broil King® oil mister or a silicone brush.

ONLY USE HIGH SMOKE POINT OILS like one of these organic cold pressed cooking oils. We recommend using one of these organic cold pressed cooking oils.

Avocado Oil – smoke point (260C / 500F) Rice Bran Oil – smoke point (255C / 500F) Canola Oil– smoke point (204C /400F).

DO NOT USE THESE ON YOUR GRIDS Do not use salted fat such as margarine or butter. Non-stick cooking sprays are less effective as they burn off at low heat.

LIGHT YOUR GRILL

Now that you have applied oil to your new cast iron grids, light the grill and operate on Med/Low (400F or 200C) for 30 minutes. The oil bakes on and creates a non-stick protective layer. Turn the control knobs OFF. After the grids have cooled, they are seasoned and ready to use.
BEFORE AND AFTER EVERY COOKOUT

CLEAN YOUR GRIDS

STAINLESS STEEL GRILL BRUSH Before and after each use, brush grids with a quality stainless steel bristle brush. Inspect the grids carefully after brushing to ensure there are no broken bristles left on the grids.
WOODEN GRILL SCRAPER A great alternative to a stainless steel brush is a wooden scraper. Use it to clean food debris on top and between the cooking grids.

SEASON YOUR GRIDS

APPLY OIL TO COOKING GRIDS Apply oil generously to both sides of the grids. Coat every part of cast iron grids thoroughly using a Broil King® oil mister or a silicone brush. (See above for recommended oil types)
RESTORING YOUR CAST IRON COOKING GRIDS
If rust appears on your grids, begin by removing the rust with a grill brush. Remove the grids with a grid lifter and wash grids thoroughly with a mild dish soap. Rinse with hot water and pat dry completely with a cloth. Don’t allow the grids to drip dry and do not wash them in a dish washer. Insert the cooking grids back into the barbecue grill and begin the process of seasoning the grids.
STORING YOUR CAST IRON GRIDS
Prior to storing or when your barbecue grill will not be used for an extended period, season the grids lightly and store in a dry place.
