Hungry For Dessert? Grill It!

Desserts On The Grill? You bet!

A lot of people only think of the grill for cooking meat and the occasional veggie kabob, but it can do SO MUCH MORE! Namely, dessert! If you’ve never cooked sweets on your grill, you’re in for a real treat.

Here are a few ways to use your grill to keep the cookout going well beyond dinner!

Grilled Fruits

If you’re new to desserts on the grill, this is the safest place to begin. The same thing that creates a delectable sear on meat – the Maillard Reaction – also occurs with fruit. After all, fruit is full of natural sugars and will quickly soften, caramelize and even char.

Just be careful! Because of all the sugar, fruit will burn easily. For very soft fruits like watermelon or bananas, a hot grill and fast sear is ideal. If you have thick pineapple slices or half peaches or plums, turn the grill down, get some sear marks and then let the heat slowly soften the fruit all the way through.

Pies & Cakes

YES, you can actually bake on your grill! In fact, the Imperial gas grill series from Broil King features two independent ovens, allowing you to bake a Pineapple Upside Down Cake on one side while grilling burgers and dogs on the other side. Does it get any more traditional-backyard-BBQ than that??

Soufflés

While soufflés are generally considered a more advanced baking technique, your gas grill is perfectly capable of handling this task as long as you maintain the temperature – and no peeking!! Opening the oven door (or grill lid) can cause your soufflé to deflate. In this case, a gas grill is preferred as you can maintain a precise temperature without adding charcoal or adjusting the vents.

Cookies

You knew we were going here! As long as a cookie sheet will fit on your grill, you can absolutely bake cookies on your grill. Simply follow your favourite cookie recipe, like this classic Chocolate Chip Cookies recipe and maintain the indicated temperature on your gas grill.
